Matjaž Schmidt’s illustrations radiate the painter’s rich knowledge and talent. His style changes constantly – some have called it unpredictable. He himself once wrote that the main idea for a set of illustrations, and the atmosphere they should create for the reader, comes in an instant, in a few seconds. He also added that it was only afterwards that the real work began, which took ‘hours, sometimes even weeks on end of sitting at a desk while meticulously modelling the little creatures and landscapes on the paper’.
