Poetry takes up the largest part of Neža Maurer’s oeuvre, which nevertheless also includes a significant amount of prose, children’s drama, translation, and journalistic work. In her works for children and youth, she portrays juvenile playfulness, childhood full of joy and imagination, of mischief and effervescence. However, she never ignores a lonely child and always invites them into her world.

I’m drawing the sun – All yellow, all yellow, So dazzlingly yellow! My drawing is brimming with gold. Dear Tree – You be the green in the picture! Dear Field – You be the brown in the picture! Dear Stream – you be the grey in the picture! Dear Mum – Step into the corner of the drawing, So that I know Where lies my home As round this sunny world I roam.
