Niko Grafenauer is one of the best contemporary Slovenian poets writing for children and adults. Most Slovenian schoolchildren have heard at the very least of Pedenjped – and many know one or two of his poems by heart. His writing for children also includes some radio dramas and puppet shows. Grafenauer has also left an indelible mark as an editor of children’s literature.

Umbrellas
Old umbrellas are strolling in the rain With their little brolly offspring by their side. Heavens, how the big ones, time and again Berate their kids with comments snide. But the old umbrellas grow, With time, into forgetful loners. At lost property, with their mood low, They cannot seem to find their owners.
