Svetlana Makarovič
1/1/1939
Through her innovative fairy-tales and poems about people, dwarves, fairies, and either real or made-up animals, the writer, poet, and chanson singer Svetlana Makarovič addresses all who still care about nurturing their inner child. Her texts are refined works of art, teaching what is right and what wrong. Her texts have marked every single childhood in Slovenia, and have found themselves a home in kindergartens, schools, households, as well as on stage, radio, and television.
Mishmash Bakery
When the dough had risen, the little mice placed it on the bread peels and slid it into the brick oven. At that moment, the old clock on the bakery wall struck midnight. Mishmash looked around the hall knowingly, drawing a large circle in the air with his finger. And behold: the grand colourful chandeliers came alight in a heartbeat, music started playing, and the little mice were transfigured into quaint, tiny people, clad in festive garments made of silk, brocade, velvet, and gold-woven linen. Beautiful crystal vases were overflowing with flowers, the table was laden with all sorts of fruits and dishes, and the cups glistened with old vintage. In the centre of the hall sat Mishmash on a velvet throne, smiling humbly, while the little cheerful humans cried out enthusiastically: ‘Long live Mishmash, our friend and king! Long live good bread, long live the good in the world!’
